Household Water Damage

Water damage doesn’t always occur due to flooding or major weather events. In fact, more often water damage occurs due to malfunctioning appliances or water leaks within the home. From washing machines to dishwashers to hot water tanks to bathtubs, showers, and sinks, water damage has many ways of wreaking havoc on our lives. There are several things you can do to prevent water damage due to household items, though. In many cases, it’s just a matter of keeping an eye on the condition of the things around you.

The bathroom is a common area for water damage. Check all fixtures where water is either held or comes out of. Toilets should be properly sealed. Showerheads shouldn’t drip when not in use. Faucets shouldn’t leak. These issues are very minor and can often be fixed with just a few strips of caulk.

Faucets and hoses around appliances such as your washing machine, refrigerator, or hot water tank should be examined periodically, too. Again, check for cracks and leaks. Rust around faucets is a sign they may be leaking as well. Fixing them now will prevent a lot of headaches if a major water damage event occurs due to a minor problem that can be repaired now.

Some other tips: Know where your water shut off is. If you don’t know where your main shut off is, know where the shut off is for each appliance that uses water. It’s usually located nearby. This is especially helpful when the toilet overflows. Turning off the water stops more water from coming in which creates more water damage. Consider water pans to put underneath your appliances that use water to catch slow leaks. Even if the water dries before you see it, you’re likely to see the water mark it leaves.
