With all of the holiday excitement coming around the corner, there’s not much time to do a lot of other things, like home improvement. But, what about after all the craziness is over? Here is list of a few things to take into consideration to prevent water damage – and just for general household inspection purposes.
How are your appliances doing? Are they still in tip-top shape? Most don't realize when their appliances aren't up to par simply because they are the ones who constantly use them. Make sure to include checking the washing machines, dryers, pipes, dishwashers, etc. Look for things like cracks in hoses, rust, and use your ears. If something doesn’t sound like it’s running correctly, it probably needs a tune-up. Appliances can last for decades if taken care of.
Another thing to check out is the plumbing. Simple inspections will ease your mind for all of your plumbing. You can do this yourself by viewing all visual plumbing and checking for rust, blockages, and leaks. Run water through a pipe to make sure it flows freely through it. If it hesitates to go down a drain, there may be a blockage.
Next thing on the list is ventilation. Any areas with large amounts of water use must be properly ventilated to prevent humidity issues. This can cause mold growth if not properly taken care of. Mold growth in your HVAC system can spread it throughout your home.
Another issue to check for is your water heater. This is one of the most forgotten and difficult areas to check. Water heaters hold 60-80 gallons of water. It’s a really good idea to make sure they’re not ready to burst!
Last, but not least is the shut offs. Make sure you always know where these are. In any case of water damage that is caused from a leak in the home, you want to shut these off so you don't have a bigger mess to deal with. This includes your electric shut-off to avoid electrocution.
These are just a few things to keep in mind after the holiday season. If you do not know how to check these things, call a water restoration expert. We will be happy to help you!
Happy holidays to you and yours!
