Batten Down The Hatches, Its Gonna Get Cold!
More than 200 million Americans are dealing with seriously cold temperatures this week, and as we all know, cold weather can wreak havoc on your home or business. Even as the temp gauges plunge, you can still take measures designed to protect your home and make sure that you don’t have any unwelcome side effects such as water damage as a result of this visit from Old man Winter.
Freezing pipes are the single most common problem found with severe temps, since water freezes up within the pipe and often these problems are located in areas that are hard to reach. If enough pressure builds up, these pipes may burst, which may not be an immediate problem, but can be a major headache once things thaw out and the water begins running again.
The fix is simple. Insulate the piping as much as possible, using insulation wraps in any area where the piping is accessible. This slows down the transfer of heat. You can also leave water running slightly to prevent freezing, and if you are going to be gone for an extended period, shut off the water and drain the lines completely. This should also be done for outside spigots and water hoses.
You should also keep cabinets open to allow warm air to circulate freely around the pipes within the kitchen or bathroom area.
Ice dams are another issue you may have to deal with. These are formed on your roof when ice melts, flows down the roof, and then refreezes. This effectively prevents water from draining properly, and means that water can get under your roofing, into the attic, and down into the walls of the structure. You want to properly insulate the attic, keeping it cool enough that melting will not occur in the first place.
