Avoiding Christmas Flood Damage
As you prepare to enjoy the Christmas season in whatever way your family deems appropriate, you want to make sure that your good time is not interrupted by problems such as water or flood damage. People leave home every year to visit family and friends only to come back and discover that they have acquired some serious water and mold problems in their absence. The good news is that most of these problems may be averted with a little due diligence.
Before you leave on your vacation trip, be sure to shut off the water that supplies your home. This should be done at the source, and all pipes and outside hoses drained of any standing water. This will ensure that there are no problems with burst pipes or overflowing toilets.
You also want to check on your gutters and downspouts, making sure they are unclogged and in proper working order. One clogged gutter is enough to cause excess water to gather and pool in undesirable places, allowing the water to flow down and into your home through the roof, walls, and flooring. Downspouts should direct water away from the home for a distance of no less than 10 feet, but ideally closer to 20.
Shut off all electronic device and appliances, since this can be a major source for fire damage. A power outage means the risk of a sudden surge when it comes back on. Electronics also continue to use power and run up your bill even when they are not in actual use. Unplugging them eliminates all of these problems.
You should leave your heat active, just enough to continue to move and circulate air throughout the home, as this will prevent problems with mold and mildew which often accompany humidity and stagnant air.
These are just a few steps that, if taken properly, can prevent unwanted water problems and allow you to make the most of your holiday season.
