Water Restoration 1-888-998-2570
Water damage comes in many forms, and in all sizes, and it doesn’t take a lot of water to cause a problem. Think back to the last time you spilled a drink on your carpet….you rush to dry it up and clean the affected surface in order to avoid an unsightly stain or musty smell. And that is just the smallest of examples. Now try to imagine your living room covered under about an inch of water….you will be surprised at just how much can be affected by such a small amount.
The key to water restoration is that it must be performed quickly but efficiently in order to avoid long term problems. You want the water removed, all of the affected surfaces dried up, and everything cleaned and restored to the condition it was in before the water came. The process, however, is far more involved and complex than it initially sounds.
Water Damage Restoration and Extraction 1-888-998-2570
The first step in the water restoration process is to locate the source of the water and shut it off or plug it up. This prevents any more water from coming in, and also allows you to determine if the water you are dealing with is in any way contaminated.
The second step is the removal of the water, known as water extraction. This can be done any number of ways depending on the depth and severity of the spill. Smaller spills may only require the use of towels or mops to soak up the excess water, while larger spills may require more severe approaches such as high powered pumps. The excess water should be completely removed before any further repairs may take place.
Once the visible water is out, you may be tempted to think it is all gone, but this is a fallacy. A simple touch to the affected surfaces will demonstrate that there is still a considerable amount of water left in the surface material. This is because many surfaces are porous and as such can retain quite a bit of moisture. It will be necessary to use additional drainage methods such as fans, blowers, air movers, and dehumidifiers around and throughout the damaged area in order to make sure that any and all remaining moisture is removed from the surfaces and surrounding air. Blowers should be placed strategically in order to provide the greatest drying power, and moved around every few hours to ensure complete coverage.
Carpets may need to be taken up, since it does little good to dry carpets if the flooring between them is left wet. This can only result in mold forming under the carpet over time. Wet and damaged carpet padding will need to be thrown out, as it cannot be repaired or dried. Replace with new padding. Carpets and rugs will need to be dried in a sunny area outdoors, preferably laid flat to dry so that it does not lose its shape. You want the carpet to be able to fit when reinstalled.
As for the flooring, do not relay the carpet until the flooring is dry. The operative word in this operation is “dry”, since any moisture can result in the formation of mold. Check walls for signs of water damage. In many cases, the walls may need to be cut open to allow the wall cavity to dry out. Drying units may be directed into the wall cavity to facilitate this process. Again, leaving water within those walls may only result in mold problems later on.
If all of this sounds like a big job, it is, and this is the reason that property owners are not advised to try and take it on themselves. Overlooking even one area of the restoration process may result in long term water damage problems that will only cost more money and time to take care of.
